Zipper Pouches

Zipper pouches are darn useful things. I decided to make a couple just to learn how to put in a zipper. Shortly after making the few, I find out I have a craft fair in a month. I would love to have these available to sell so now I'm making them as fast as I can. A friend who is just learning to sew wanted to know how I make them so I'm making this tutorial.

The template I made is 20cm across with 3 by 3.5cm boxes cut out on the sides. Cut out on the fold the mushroom shaped pattern with a seam allowance out of the outer and inner fabric, and another without the seam allowance of a thin batting, interfacing, or what I'm using here, craft felt.

Don't forget a seam allowance on the outer and inner fabric.

Cut on the fold so it unfolds to look like this.

This is a sheet of craft felt. It really doesn't matter what color it is as it will be between fabric layers. Just don't use dark felt with light fabric that it might show thru.

Fold felt in half and cut on the fold. You don't need seam allowance for the felt.

Outer fabric, inner fabric, batting layer, and zipper.

Lay outer fabric face down and place felt on top. The outer layer will be larger because of the seam allowance.

Since I am using craft fabric instead of fusible interfacing, I am going to do some light quilting to keep the felt from shifting or moving. I think the width of a yardstick is the perfect size for quilting lines.

With lines marked its time to sew them. Just follow the lines.

A close up of the quilted lines.

Top all quilted up.

Fold lengthwise and mark where the middle of the rounded ends are. This is to line up the zipper.

Marking the outer fabric.

Marking center of zipper.

And marking the middle of the center fabric.

Make small cuts along both sides of the zipper to help it bend around the curve of the pouch.

Little cuts along both edges of the zipper.

Line up the center of the zipper with the center of the quilted outer fabric. Right  sides facing each other.

Pin or clip the zipper in place.

So this is a Zipper Foot. It has a normal side and a skinny side. That skinny side let's you get right up against the zipper. It helps make the seam straighter and cleaner.

One side sewn up. Unzip the zipper and clip the other side in place lining up the center marks and sew.

Time to line the inner fabric up with the other side. Lay the inner fabric down ontop of the zipper, right side down, and make a zipper sandwich. That is, the outer fabric is right side up, the zipper in the middle, and the inner fabric right side down ontop of the outer.

Clip the inner fabric in place and sew the curves. Don't sew the square cut outs. You will need that for turning the pouch right side out.

Layers all sewn up.

Turn the pouch right side out using the square cutouts.

Fingerpress or iron the pouch flat and top stitch around the rounded edges by the zipper.

Close up of topstitching. I don't bother removing the zipper foot.

Topstitch done.

Close up of topstitched edge.

Zip the pouch half way.

Pinch the square holes shut and clip to hold the holes shut.

Stitch the holes shut. I go over the zipper back and forth a couple times to make sure the zipper is well sealed on that side. Then trip excess.

Close up of stitching over the zipper a few times.

Turn the pouch right side out and push corners out and shape.

Pushed out corners view from inside.

Finished pouch!

Ta-Da! I wrote this fast. Hope it's understandable.
